According to doctors, if you experience illness after consuming beef, lamb, pork, or dairy, you may be suffering from Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). AGS is a condition that is often underdiagnosed and underestimated. It is estimated that around half a million people are affected by AGS, and there has been a surge in reported cases in the Lehigh Valley area this summer.

Symptoms of AGS can include typical allergy reactions like rashes and numbness in the lips. However, it can also cause a life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis, which can result in the closure of the throat.

To determine if you have AGS, a blood test is required. The condition has been linked to bites from the “lone star” tick, but other tick species have not been ruled out as a potential cause.

To prevent tick bites, it is crucial to wear protective clothing when spending time outdoors and thoroughly check for ticks after coming back inside. Taking a hot shower and drying clothes in a dryer can also help eliminate any hidden ticks.

Ticks can also be found in backyard areas. Some natural repellents for ticks include lavender, catnip, garlic, rosemary, basil, lemon grass, and sage. Planting these herbs around outdoor spaces can help repel ticks. Additionally, using diatomaceous earth along the periphery of your yard can be effective in keeping ticks away.

Pets, especially dogs, are also at risk of tick bites. It is essential to regularly check pets for ticks, particularly in the ears and between the paws. Local veterinarians can provide various options for protecting pets from ticks.

As cases of AGS continue to rise, it is important for individuals to be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions to avoid tick bites and subsequent allergic reactions.
